The work continues to explore themes from previous bodies of work such as religion and personal belief, as well as referencing contemporary events such as the recent police brutality experienced in Ferguson, Missouri. ![]() However, in Price’s paintings the inclusion of short, opaque bursts of text encourages differing understandings based on the viewer’s own perspective and personal experiences. The work echoes the vanitas still-life paintings of the Dutch Golden Age where objects are infused with an unambiguous meaning beyond their original purpose, such as broken glassware to symbolise the transience of life. However, these two worlds meet in Price’s latest body of work which includes photorealistic paintings of fire extinguishers, a tool which Price has previously used to paint 20’ tall tags out on the street. The elements of his work which have their roots in his writing graffiti background under the pseudonym ‘Cyclops’ has long remained conspicuously separate from the more conceptual, still-life work which Price has been developing since his time studying for the prestigious Fine Art MA at the Royal College of Art. ‘ Dumb Poetry’ is the second exhibition at the Lazarides group of galleries for the multi-faceted painter Lucas Price. ![]() The show runs until 27 September 2015 at the former Tropicana Lido in Weston-Super-Mare. Banksy appropriated the work of Jenny Holzer in an early street piece dating from 2000 and featuring her slogan ‘ Playing it safe can cause a lot of damage in the long run‘ her work in the Dismaland show features a continually changing rota of her short, concise statements on electronic lightboards. James Cauty’s sprawling urban landscape-in-miniature depicts the immediate aftermath of a period of civil unrest dominated by the figures of 3,000 uniformed police officers, which prompts the viewer to question whether the permanent structures of state control are any less intimidating and contemptible than the temporary rioting. Escif is one of a perhaps surprisingly small number of contemporary artists whose work addresses and provides a coherent critique of current socio-economic issues in a manner that goes beyond just using quasi-political imagery. In addition to new works by Banksy, the show also features works by wide range of international artists. The show is being held in the seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare, which in some respects has the feeling of having been metaphorically abandoned more specifically, the show is being held in the town’s former lido, which has been literally abandoned. ‘ Dismaland‘ is the latest show curated by Banksy and it is set in a dilapidated amusement park complete with deliberately surly employees, unwinnable fairground games and a decaying Disney-esque castle.
